Mixed Media Art

I have been doing a lot of mixed media art lately. When I tell most people this, they then proceed with the question: "What is mixed media art?" Aside from my new favorite thing! Mixed media art can be defined as:

Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" .

Mixed media pieces a student and I did recently in a class; we were decorating journal covers. Oh yea, my student is SIX years old! #ProudTeacher :)

I kept asking my student in the above class:  "What is this art called?" (Mixed media). "What are the materials called in this art?" (Mediums!) We got there, eventually.

It was amazing to watch her mind start working though, looking over all the components and thinking "I can use this to make this". As a teacher it was a real joy to see.

In short, mixed media art is mixing a lot of different materials to compose a work of art.
